18th Century Atlas Armillary Sphere
Mythological god Zeus
condemned Atlas, a Titan who waged a ten year war against the Olympian gods, to
perpetually repent for his sins.
Zeus
punished Atlas,
by forcing him to
carry the weight of the world on his mighty shoulders, while
standing at
the end of earth in front of the house of Night and the border of
Chaos.
The decorative armillary represents the Renaissance world, when the earth was believed to
be at the center of the universe. Gracefully
intertwined silver rings represent trajectories of heavenly bodies around the
Earth.
